María Llanos Carrión Varela

María Llanos Carrión Varela currently works as Technical Director at the EU and International Research Projects Office at the University of Castilla- La Mancha (Spain). She graduated in English Philology at the University of Murcia (Spain) in 2004, having spent one academic year (2002-03) as an Erasmus student at the Freie Universität Berlin (Germany). After her degree, she completed her Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Modern Foreign Languages for Secondary (Spanish and German) at the University of Derby (United Kingdom) in 2005. She has also taught Modern Foreign Languages in secondary schools in the United Kingdom for several years. She holds a MA (2010) in English Applied Linguistics from the National University of Distance Education (UNED, Spain) and a PhD from the same university, within the PhD Programme in English Applied Linguistics. Her doctoral thesis versed on Knowledge Engineering, specifically about the introduction and reuse of cultural and encyclopaedic knowledge in FunGramKB, a knowledge base for natural language processing. Thanks to this PhD thesis, in 2015 she was awarded the Extraordinary Doctorate Award (Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado) by the National University of Distance Education (UNED, Spain).

She has been a speaker in many events connected to management of European funds for research, as well as delivered some modules connected to research fundamentals in several degrees and master courses at Universidad de Castilla- La Mancha (UCLM). She also acts as LEAR (Legal Entities Appointed Representative) of her University before the European Commission, thus combining her administrative and managerial work at UCLM with her study in Linguistics and Knowledge Engineering at UNED.

She has taken part in two international conferences connected to FunGramKB and Lexico-Constructional Model (First and Second International Conferences on Meaning and Knowledge Representation: LCM & FungramKB, 2012 and 2013) and has published part of her work in the journals Anglogermanica Online and Revista de Lingüística y Lenguas Aplicadas.

Her research interests comprise Computational and Cognitive Linguistics, Knowledge Engineering, ontologies, Artificial Intelligence and Semantic web applications, as well as language universals and metaphorical phenomena, especially if connected to natural language processing applications.
