Avelino Corral Esteban works as a full-time Professor at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He teaches courses on English syntax, semantics, phonetics and phonology, psycholinguistics and contrastive linguistics in different degrees (English Studies, Modern Languages, Spanish Studies, etc.). He holds a PhD from UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia), a BA in English Philology from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and a BA in German Philology from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. His PhD. dissertation, entitled “A Comparative Study of English, Lakota and Cheyenne Syntax within the Role and Reference Grammar Framework”, earned the UNED Distinguished PhD. Dissertation Award in 2013.

His main areas of research interest cover the study of the grammar of the Native American languages spoken in the area of the Great Plains in the USA and Canada, (i.e. Lakota, Cheyenne, Blackfoot, Crow, and Arapaho, among others), the interaction between syntax, semantics and pragmatics across languages, and the comparative analysis of the syntax of Romance, Germanic and Celtic languages. He has several articles in national and international journals and editorials (RESLA, RÆL, Revista de Lingüística y Lenguas Aplicadas, ITB, Revista de Filoloxía Asturiana, Brill, John Benjamins, Cambridge University Press).

In addition to his published research, he has also presented papers at national and international conferences including The XII AHGBI (Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland) Conference, The 31st. AESLA International Conference, The 2013 International Conference on Role and Reference Grammar, The 48th. Linguistics Colloquium, and The 45th. Algonquian Conference. Furthermore, he has been invited to present his research at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris and University of Cambridge.

At present, he is collaborating in the national research projects Development of a virtual laboratory for natural language processing from a functional paradigm (grant no. FFI2011-53788-C3-1-P) and Telecollaborative networks for the development of transversal competences in Higher Education (EDU2014-54673-R) and leading the project Honóxease Névéstahémone aimed at the preservation and revitalization of the Cheyenne language. He was also involved in the national research project Development of a system of semantic-conceptual representation and its implementation in a bidirectional syntax-semantics linking algorithm (grant no. FFI2011-29798-C02-01) and in the Tšʰumaš Transcription Project, funded by the US ACTA´s Living Culture Grants Program and led by the native run organization AICLS (The Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival), whose aim is to foster the preservation and revitalization of Tšʰumaš, an indigenous language spoken along the central and southern California Coast.
